We Shall Never Forget!
8 4

Fifteen years ago this month (my how time flies), we were attacked by terrorists on several fronts and the world has never been the same.  I can still remember (like all of us) where I was and what I was doing at that moment when the second plane hit the second tower at the World Trade Center.  I remember thinking that the first tower looked like a small plane had accidentally hit the tower and that it didn't look that bad.  Then the realization that this was terrorism struck as the United flight veered into the second tower.  The towers shockingly fell and we all looked on in horror.  How did that happen?

I remember how quiet the skies were in the days that followed and how you just felt violated as a nation.  Do we really remember?  Are we honoring those who died so innocently now?  I personally would like to see us recognize 9/11 as an official national Holiday and that we coincide the end of summer with that day instead of Labor Day.  Just my opinion.  Labor Day seems less important to me but that's just me.

Usually, I like to keep these newsletters light and funny but I feel like somehow we are forgetting as a nation what happened and how so many people lost their lives that day.  I think about those children who lost parents that day and how they must feel 15 years later.  I think about the loss and how our response as a nation was unified.  So many years later and there seems to be less unity and so much more division.  We now see attacks on the police.  What is happening?

I'd like to remember this month that we are Americans and that our strength lies in being able to have differing opinions and yet peaceful discourse.  Oh how I wish we could be more unified...

Please remember the lessons we learned and continue to learn seemingly each month.  Be vigilant, be diligent, be smart and say something if you see something.  Ok. Enough.  Moving on.

Remember this meme (or rather hoax)?  I think it might have been the first one ever and I thought it was real.  Did you?

Last month's winner of the "guess the location" game was Tim Walsh with the correct guess of San Francisco.  Thanks for playing.
More about the location below...
And now for a new picture above- Can you guess where it is by looking through the keyhole?  "This group of islands is far away from the US and is mostly visited by Europeans. They were uninhabited throughout most of history but eventually were by the French and colonized by the British (shocking).  It is now a playground to the rich and famous." Can you guess the location?

Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to figure it out.  The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent issue.  Good luck and have fun.

San Francisco, CA - Keyhole Answer

1 2

"This city is home to giants, sharks, an old prison, a famous bridge and a very twisty road.  You can have a drink at the top of the Mark too."

The city of San Francisco is home to the Giants, Alcatraz Island (tons of sharks in the bay), the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street and the very famous Top of the Mark Restaurant.

The Top of the Mark is a rooftop bar located at the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill at California and Mason Streets in San Francisco, California. Located at the highest point of downtown San Francisco, on fog-free days the Top of the Mark features spectacular views of the financial district, Chinatown, North Beach, The San Francisco Bay, and especially of Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park.

During its 29 years of operation, the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary claimed that no prisoner successfully escaped. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts, two men trying twice; 23 were caught alive, six were shot and killed during their escape, two drowned, and five are listed as "missing and presumed drowned". The most violent occurred on May 2, 1946, when a failed escape attempt by six prisoners led to the Battle of Alcatraz. Before it was a Federal Prison, it was a military garrison and then a military prison.

Here are some things you may not know about the Golden City or City by the Bay:

1. The Chinese fortune cookie was invented by a Japanese resident of San Francisco.

2. And Irish coffee? It was perfected and popularized in the City by the Bay.

3. Lombard Street gets all the love, but Filbert St. between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets is the steepest—31.5 degrees!

4. San Francisco was part of Mexico until the Mexican-American War in 1848.

5. During the Depression, not a single San Francisco-based bank failed.

6. Business was so good, the city constructed the Oakland Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge during the Depression.

7. When Al Capone was held at Alcatraz, he gave regular Sunday concerts with the inmate band, the Rock Islanders. He played the banjo.

8. In 1901, the city outlawed burials. Most of its cemeteries are in Colma, Calif. There, the dead outnumber the living by over 1000 to 1.

9. The “Summer of Love” actually started in the winter. The January 1967 Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park kicked it off.

10. Speaking of seasonal confusion, Mark Twain wasn’t as down on San Francisco’s weather as some people would have you believe. Twain never uttered the quote, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

11. The neighborhoods of Marina, Mission Bay, and Hunters Point are all built atop a landfill.

12. The first bubonic plague epidemic in the continental US broke out in San Fransisco’s Chinatown in 1900.

13. As historical beginnings go, the United Nations Charter was drafted and ratified in San Francisco in 1945.

14. And as historic endings go, the Beatles gave their last full concert at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966.

15. San Francisco was huge on the mid-century treaty circuit. In 1951, the Treaty of San Francisco officially ended Japanese hostilities from World War II.

16. When prospectors caught gold fever and hightailed it to California, San Francisco’s port became packed with abandoned ships. With demand to build the city booming, the ships were torn apart and re-purposed into banks, businesses, and homes.

17. Decades later, in 1906, three quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and fire.

18. Contemporary reports of the fire note that an unlikely hero helped save the city: Redwood trees. When fire hit buildings made of redwood, which has low resin content and a porous grain that takes in lots of water, they didn’t go up in smoke.

19. In September 1859, San Francisco’s favorite eccentric resident, Joshua Abraham Norton, declared himself America’s emperor.

20. Emperor Norton had a following: Nearly 30,000 people later packed the streets for his funeral.

21. The bear on California’s state flag is modeled after a California grizzly named Monarch, who was held at Golden Gate Park.

22. The U.S. Navy originally planned on painting the Golden Gate Bridge black with yellow stripes. The famed “International Orange” color was supposed to be a sealant.

23. In 1867, San Francisco instituted America’s first “ugly law,” which prohibited unsightly people from showing their faces in public. (It’s since been repealed.)

24. The city’s cable cars are the only National Historical Monument that can move.

25. The Liberty Bell once vacationed in San Francisco! When San Francisco hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, America’s most famous bell made a national train tour to be part of the fun. After the exposition ended, it returned to Philadelphia, where it’s stayed ever since. Once you’ve seen San Francisco, why travel anywhere else?

26. The average depth of the San Francisco Bay is only as deep as a swimming pool at approximately 12-15 feet deep. Large ships in the bay must follow deep underwater channels that are maintained by frequent dredging.

Polk County Sheriff

11 2

POLK COUNTY FLORIDA SHERIFF, GRADY JUDD

An illegal alien, in Polk County, Florida, who got pulled over in a routine traffic stop, ended up "executing" the deputy who stopped him.The deputy was shot eight times, including once behind his right ear at close range. Another deputy was wounded and a police dog killed.

The murderer was found hiding in a wooded area. As soon as he took a shot at the SWAT team, officers opened fire on him. They hit the guy 68 times.

Naturally, the media went nuts and asked why they had to shoot the poor, undocumented immigrant 68 times.

Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel, "because that's all the ammunition we had."

The Coroner also reported that the illegal alien died of natural causes. When asked by a reporter how that could be, since there were 68 bullet wounds in his body, he simply replied: (BEST QUOTE ever) . .
"When you are shot 68 times you are naturally gonna die."

TURNkey IT Endorses Ryan Lochte

15 2
Okay.  So the kid got hammered, ripped down a poster at some gas station and embellished his story about a gun being cocked to his head.  The truth of the matter is that there was a gun involved, a language barrier and alcohol.  We have a whole governmental department called the ATF that deals with two of the three elements in this story.  In fact, I'm quite sure that someone had to be smoking around that gas station, so we may have the trifecta involved here - ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND FIREARMS.  Give the kid a break.

That smug Matt Lauer, the super sleuth that he is, really busted Mr. Lochte and the poor kid lost all of his endorsement deals.  Well not this one.  TURNkey IT knows how to forgive and learn from mistakes.

After all, we have forgiven people in this country for much bigger transgressions...

Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky NOT having sexual relations in the oval office
Hugh Grant picked up a prostitute when married to Elizabeth Hurley (really?)
Mike Tyson for Biting Ivander's ear off
Robert Downey Jr. and his drug use
Michael Jackson and his Neverland Ranch
John Wayne was a racist
Dr. Dre beat up an Interviewer
Chris Brown beat up Rhianna
Matthew Broderick killed two women in a car accident in Ireland
Sean Penn hit Madonna with a baseball bat

Come on. Join me and give Ryan your support today!  GO USA!

Vodka...
17
Who Knew???

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The stuff dissolves adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the  lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka.  The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on wine stains, scrub with a brush, and then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle with vodka and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9 Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water into a Ziploc freezer bag and freeze for a slushy, refreshing ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains.

11. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.

12. To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.

13 Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting (don't pee on it - that doesn't work).

14. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

15. Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth. Allow your gums to absorb some of the alcohol to numb the pain.

When they were young lads, Brian and Greg walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.  The pharmacist at the counter asked Brian, "Son, how old are you?”  “Eight,” Brian replied.

The man continued, “Do you know what these are used for?”  Brian replied, “Not exactly, but they aren't for me.  They're for Greg.  He's my best friend.  He's six.”

"Oh, really?" the pharmacist replied with a grin.  “Yes," Brian said.  "We saw on T V that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike.  Right now, he can't do none of that.”

Happy 5th of July!
10 2

I wanted to get this newsletter out today as it probably would have been lost last week in the rush to get out for the 4th of July.  I hope everyone had a great time and you did not blow any digits off while lighting fireworks...

2016 is officially half over and the best is yet to come.  This month, we celebrate the 4th of July and all of the things that go along with summer - baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and cars made in Mexico and Japan (and you thought I was going to say Chevrolet).  Most of us went to a parade, had a BBQ and then watched some fireworks.

Did you know that the 4th of July was celebrated in the 1800s by parades, public readings of the Declaration of Independence, and artillery salutes?  Fireworks were also part of early celebrations as well as over 14,000 of them countrywide today.  Since 1870 the 4th of July has officially been a FEDERAL Holiday (the others being New Year's Day, Veteran's Day and Christmas Day).

Some tidbits of knowledge about the 4th of July:
  • Thomas Jefferson changed the wording of the Declaration of Independence from "the pursuit of property" to "the pursuit of happiness"

  • Only two men signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776 — John Hancock and Charles Thompson

  • In 1776, about 2.5 million people lived in the United States verses 311.7 million people in 2011

  • An estimated 150 million hot dogs will be consumed on July 4th.

  • The oldest, continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States is the 4th of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island; it began in 1785.

  • John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826

Last month's winner of the "guess the location" game was Joe McGonagall with the correct response of "some mosque" - very clever and yet the closest guess.  Thanks for playing.

And now for a new picture above- Can you guess where it is by looking through the keyhole?  "This city is a stark contrast to the rest of its country let alone it's continent.  Therein lies the attraction and you don't even have to wear a cape to explore it.  At the very southern tip of its continent, the level of sophistication is astounding in this otherwise WILD place." Can you guess the location?

Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to figure it out.  The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent issue.  Good luck and have fun.

The Blue Mosque in Istanbul - Keyhole Answer

blue 2

"You have to cover your legs and women their heads before entering this blue place.  Six Minarets decorate this building and can be heard for miles around. "

To begin with, my thoughts and prayers go out to all those who lost their lives in the Istanbul airport terrorist attacks.  It is never my intention to choose a location that could be controversial in any way.  This is meant to be a lighthearted, fun communication and it is sad that there is pretty much no corner of the world that is truly safe from these kinds of attacks.

A few years ago, I had the privilege to travel to Europe just before the "Arab Spring".  At that time, my wife and I visited this historic place called the Blue Mosque (Called Sultanahmet Camii in Turkish).  This place is a big tourist attraction and something to be seen.  I would highly recommend getting a tour escort in Istanbul so that you can maneuver throughout this massive city of about 18 million (feels like about 40 million).  The City is on the Bosphorus River which is the border of Europe and Asia.  A very interesting and mystical place...

One of the things that strikes you as you walk up to this massive structure is the amount of people mulling around.  The crowds are huge and there are lines to get in.  If you have a guide, the process of touring is much faster (you jump the queue) and the guides are full of knowledge.  Women must cover their heads and legs and the men must also cover their legs.  Shoes are not allowed.

The mosque is known for its blue tiles surrounding the walls of interior design.  It was built between 1609 and 1616 (JUST 7 YEARS), during the rule of Ahmed I. It also contains his tomb, a madrasa (school for Islam) and a hospice.  This place is an active mosque, so it is closed to non worshipers for a half hour or so during five daily prayers.

Just before each of the five daily prayers, you cannot miss the call to prayer that sounds and looks like
this (YouTube).. It is a bit odd to be part of (if you are not Muslim). The towers or minarets that surround the mosque are a symbol of importance and where the call to prayer is broadcast from.  The more minarets, the more important the mosque.  When the building was constructed, Ahmed ordered the 6 minarets which caused a bit of a stir because that is the same number at the mosque of the Ka'aba in Mecca (the main place of worship where all mosques of the world face).  Ahmed overcame this presumptuous stance by ordering a seventh minaret be built at the Mecca mosque.

Also part of the general grounds is the Hippodrome.  This object is what is left of a social center of Constantinople (I know this gets confusing) where they used to race horses and chariots.  When you see it, you picture Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur racing a chariot (
see clip here).  At least that is what I thought. It must have been quite the spectacle.

As 90% of all people from Istanbul are Muslim, a trip to the Blue Mosque offers a unique opportunity to peer into their world in a welcome fashion.

Recipe of the Month - perfect for summer
Capture11 3

I have to admit that I really don't like fruit salad. However, this one is a great recipe and has a twist to it - there is a citrusy dressing that marinates the fruit.  Give it a try... you may just be the next hit at the party.

"The perfect fruit salad for a backyard bbq or any occasion. There are never leftovers! This is one of my favorite fruit salad recipes, as I think the sauce really makes it. This salad is tastier the longer you can let it soak in its juices. I prefer 3 to 4 hours in the refrigerator before I serve it. Enjoy."

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cubed fresh pineapple
  • 2 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 3 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced
  • 3 bananas, sliced
  • 2 oranges, peeled and sectioned
  • 1 cup seedless grapes
  • 2 cups blueberries

Directions

  1. Bring orange juice, lemon juice, brown sugar, orange zest, and lemon zest to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
  2. Layer the fruit in a large, clear glass bowl in this order: pineapple, strawberries, kiwi fruit, bananas, oranges, grapes, and blueberries. Pour the cooled sauce over the fruit. Cover and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours before serving.
