Through the Keyhole - July 2018

Through the Keyhole
Take a break from your day...Not your

Summer is HERE and
so is the 4th!
My Dad used to say
that July 4th is the mid-point of summer and that it is "all downhill
from here". What a bummer. I look at it this way- My kids
got out of school on the 6th and they go back on August 22nd. That is
77 days or exactly 11 weeks. The 4th of July is 28 days or 4 weeks
after school let out. That is exactly 35.4% and NOT 50% (sorry Dad).
So you legitimately
have about 2/3rds of summer left!
ABOUT THE FOURTH OF JULY:
There were 56 signers on the Declaration of
Benjamin Franklin was the oldest signer at 70.
13 of the signers were 35 or younger, while 7 were
60 or older.
1 signer later recanted after being held prisoner
by the British. His name was Richard Stockton.
8 of the signers were born in Britain or Ireland.
Two and a half years had passed after the Boston
Tea Party when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
On July 4th, 1778, George Washington celebrated the
anniversary by giving his soldiers double rations of rum.
Massachusetts became the first state to make July
4th a national holiday in 1781.
On July 4th, 1826, both John Adams and Thomas
Jefferson died, 50 years after the signing.
In 1941, Congress declared Independence Day a
federal legal holiday.
63% of Americans attend a fireworks display today.
80% attend a barbecue, picnic or cookout.
66% display an American flag
76% get together with family.
26% set off their own fireworks, which is illegal
in 4 states.
Americans eat 150 million hot dogs on the 4th of
July, which is enough to stretch from DC to LA more than 5 times.
1/3 of all hot dogs in the US come from Iowa.
And now for a new

Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to
figure it out. The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent
issue. Good luck and have fun.

Palace, Tibet -Keyhole Answer
"Built in the
7th century, at an altitude of 12,000 ft., thisartistic and architectural marvel used to
be the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until 1959."
Last month, Ryan
Erklin won the location by guessing correctly. Great job!
This amazing palace has the honor of being the
highest ancient palace in the world, with its highest point
reaching 3,750 meters (12,300 feet) above sea level, towering 100 meters
(300 feet) above the city of Lhasa. It was built as the center of
Tibetan government by the fifth Dalai Lama in 1645.
Potala Palace is a museum. It served as the residence of Dalai
Lama, until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India. The palace is now a museum,
with a rich collection of art and an enduring beauty that is difficult to
match. The art here includes gold, silver, and jade relics and structures.
Scriptures and paintings, some dating back to over several thousand years,
can be found at the Palace.
This 13-stories-high palace has over 1,000 rooms, and covers
over 13 hectares (32 acres). The stone walls measure 3 meters (10 feet)
thick on average.
Interesting and Fun Facts about Potala Palace:

place of Buddhism".

This is one of the most
classic movies of GenX. It is the tale of fledgling actors living
their lives in Los Angeles and their dreams of Hollywood fame. If you
have not seen it. Please do so. You will get a kick out of the
young, skinny Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn. Such great fun-
Much of the film
was shot without permission, including the scene where Mike and Trent pull
over just outside Vegas. LVPD officers showed up and demanded to see a
permit, a permit director Doug Liman didn’t have. While the assistant
director stalled the police, the scene was shot while everyone involved
pretended not to be filming and the actor’s not acting.
Jon Favreau wrote
the script in just 10 days; ‘comedic therapy’, as he called it, after
breaking up with his girlfriend.
To get permission
to use the Jaws
theme, Doug Liman sent a copy of the film to director Steven Spielberg. The
legendary director cast Vince Vaughan for The Lost World: Jurassic Park
after viewing the film, having never heard of him before.
grandmother cameos in the film as the $5 Winner in Las Vegas. Vince
Vaughan’s father, Vernon, also appears as the ‘$100 Gambler’.
machine scene, where Mike leaves a long rambling message on a woman’s
answer machine he has just met at a bar, is based on a similar story told
by Curb Your Enthusiasm star Jeff Garlin during his one-man show I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With.
In Jeff’s (original) version, he tells of leaving a declaration of love on
a woman’s answer machine, only for her to play it in the company of 12
other people (including Garlin). The movie adaptation of I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With
was made in 2006, with the answering machine story left out.
The iconic line
‘you’re so money’ comes from a Spike Lee Air Jordan commercial. The
bombastic director refers to Michael Jordan as ‘money’ throughout the TV
spot, and Favreau incorporated it into his script.
The film is based
on Jon Favreau’s experiences when he first moved to LA. Ron Livingston and Vince
Vaughan play exaggerated versions of themselves.
The house party
scene was shot at an actual house party, and two of the locations then
residence were Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, producers of the of the Twilight films.
The interior and
exterior shots of Mike’s apartment are of the actual building Jon Favreau
was living in at the time. Adam Scott, from Parks and Recreation, lived below Favreau.
The five members
of the group (Trent, Mikey, Sue, Rob, and Charles) represent the members of
the original Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Joey
Bishop, and Sammy Davis Jr.)
Many of the bars
the film shot in were open for normal business, and a sign had to be put
during filming, warning bar patrons that if they wandered into a shot they
would be considered as unpaid extras.

Finding a place
for Family of 14
A lawyer, who had a wife and
12 children, needed his rental agreement renewed as it was terminated by
the owner who wanted to reoccupy the home. But he was having a lot of
difficulty finding a new house. When he said that he had 12 children, no
one would rent a home to him because they felt that the children would
destroy the place.
He couldn't say he had no
children, because he couldn't lie, we all know lawyers cannot and do not
lie. So he sent his wife for a walk to the cemetery with 11 of their kids.
He took the remaining one with him to see rental homes with the real estate
He loved one of the homes and
the price was right -- the agent asked, "How many children do you
have?" He answered, "Twelve." The agent asked, "Where
are the others?"
The lawyer, with his best

It's not necessary to lie,
one only has to choose the right words. And don't forget, most politicians
