It's Football Season!
What a great summer it has been and now we look forward to the fall which unfortunately leads to winter.  However, fall means football, postseason baseball (fingers crossed), chili and cool nights.  Not a bad time of year in Chicago.
There are two types of football fans in my life - Bears fans and Packer fans. This time of year, if you are into football, it is time to get behind your team.  The Bears - Packers rivalry has been going on forever and I remember my dad taking us to Green Bay to cheer on our beloved Bears. The season opens this year on September 13th with the Bears hosting the Packers in Soldier Field.

SCOREBOARD

The teams have TIED a total of 6 times, most recently in 1953.  I am no expert but I don't think ties are allowed anymore.
For you soccer fans out there (actually called football everywhere else but here), the Premiere League has begun and is currently being led by who cares.... (just kidding - I love soccer, I mean football)
And now for a new keyhole picture above- Can you guess where it is?

"If you have been here to do what this woman is doing in the picture then you are in a unique club recognized for being lucky.  Name the country and the exact place for extra credit."

Last month, Jerry Aberman guessed correctly with Bryce Canyon National Park.  Great recognition of your national parks.

Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to figure it out.  The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent issue.  Good luck and have fun.

Bryce Canyon National Park - Keyhole Answer

keey 2

"This place really shows off the forces of natural erosion and was once described is a 'hell of a place to lose a cow'.  HooDoo you know who's been there?"

This summer, my mother in law took my family on a tour of the southwest.  One of our stops was this lovely place located in southern Utah at an elevation of about 8300 ft.  It was literally breathtaking...

The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon, but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.

Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors.

Nineteenth-century Mormon settler Ebenezer Bryce, for whom the park is named, said it was "a hell of a place to lose a cow." The canyon's remarkable collection of whimsical hoodoo spires were believed by the early Paiute Indians to be people frozen in stone by the mischievous spirit Coyote. Early geologists feared the hoodoos would transform into humans.

The greatest part about this park is that you can do a hike in the morning, do the same one in the afternoon and the same one again in the evening and you will have 3 entirely different experiences.  For light in Bryce Canyon changes everything.

Windows Secrets

27 2

Since the release of Windows 8, did you know that you can simply hit the windows key (the one in the lower left hand side of your keyboard) and type the name of an application to find and start it?  Try it.  Hit the windows key and type the name of an application (i.e. word).  The computer will bring up a list of all applications containing what you type.  Simply click on the one you'd like to open.  Voila!

In Windows 10, there is a secret start menu simply by right clicking on the windows icon in your lower left hand corner.  This brings up a  very useful menu where you can quickly jump to programs, control panel, etc.

Now isn't that handy?

What kind of a Professor does this?
28 2

A University of Maryland professor posed this final question on a final exam:

Here you have the opportunity to earn some extra credit on your final paper grade.  Select whether you want 2 points or 6 points added onto your final paper grade.  But there's a small catch:  If more than 10% of the class selects 6 points, then no one gets any points.  Your responses will be anonymous to the rest of the class, only I will see the responses.

Selterman told USA Today College he first heard the question back when he was an undergrad at Johns Hopkins University. The dilemma was actually written about in a psych journals 25 years ago, and points to a concept called the tragedy of the commons.

“The tragedy of the commons is basically a dilemma between doing what’s good for you as an individual versus doing what’s best for the group” the prof said. “Now it stands to reason that people behave selfishly. But if too many people behave selfishly, the group will suffer…and then everyone in the group individually will suffer.”

Diehard Fisherman?
25

A funeral procession pulled into a cemetery. Several carloads of family members followed a black truck towing a boat with a casket in it.

A passer-by remarked, "That guy must have been a very avid fisherman.”

"Oh, he still is," remarked one of the mourners.

"As a matter of fact, he's headed off to the lake as soon as we bury his wife..."

He Needs Water.

5 Things Windows can do that Mac's can't

1. Scribble on web pages

Yep, we’re going there: Touchscreens were both a curse and a blessing for Windows 8. When Windows 8 first came out, using a touchscreen on a laptop or desktop felt strange and confusing. But after a while, you came to expect your PC to have a screen that responded to your touch.

Windows 10 is doubling down on touchscreen capabilities by letting you do things like annotate webpages using the new Microsoft Edge Web browser by writing directly on the screen, so long as your computer has a touchscreen display. Once you write on the page, you can save your chicken scratch as an image file or share it with your friends and colleagues.

Oh, and you’ll still be able to play touch-based games like Fruit Ninja.

2. Switch between desktop and tablet

Speaking of touchscreens, Windows 10 will also work much better when used on laptop-tablet hybrids such as the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga, thanks to its new Continuum Mode.

With Continuum, you’ll be able to use your Surface Pro 3 like a regular Windows 7-style laptop and then automatically switch to the Windows 8-style tablet mode when you disconnect the Surface’s keyboard.

Your Apple friends, on the other hand, will still have to carry around their iPads and MacBooks if they want to have both a tablet and laptop.

3. Search by voice

OK, the concept for Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant is a pretty big rip-off of Apple’s Siri. But whereas Siri is trapped on the iPhone and iPad, Cortana is coming to your desktop and laptop PC, which means you’ll be able to search the Web and your PC using just your voice.

But Cortana is more than just someone to talk to when you’re lonely: She, er, it will also provide you with weather updates and sports scores, help manage your schedule, and more — all on your desktop, laptop, or laptop-tablet hybrid.

4. Stream Xbox One games

Xbox One and Windows 10 are going to be excellent bedfellows, thanks to Windows 10’s new Xbox One game-streaming. As the name implies, the feature will let you wirelessly stream your Xbox One games directly to your Windows 10 desktop, laptop, or tablet over your home’s Wi-Fi network, so you’ll be able to play Call of Duty from the comfort of wherever.

But that’s not all Xbox One streaming gets you. It will also let you play multiplayer games with your friends who have an Xbox One from your PC — a feature gamers have wanted for years.

5. Play the hottest games

Of course, like its predecessors, Windows 10 will be the go-to operating system for anyone who wants to play the latest and greatest computer games with the best graphics possible. Sure Apple’s App Store offers some game titles. But the selection is nothing like what’s available for Windows. So if you want to be able to play things like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Mortal Kombat X, you’re going to need a Windows 10 PC.

Pesto Chicken Tart

40 2

Makes dinner for 2, appetizers for 4
1 sheet frozen puff pastry
1 small head of peeled garlic cloves (optional)
3 heaping tablespoons basil pesto, homemade or store bought
1 scant cup cooked, diced chicken breast
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 400°F. Remove one sheet of puff pastry from the freezer and allow to thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes. If using garlic, place cloves on a baking sheet and cook in the oven until soft and light golden brown, 10-15 minutes. Allow the cloves to cool and then chop finely.

Unfold the puff pastry onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, pressing and pinching to close any holes in the seams. Using a fork, prick the dough all over—including the edges—to prevent it from puffing during baking.

Brush the pesto in a thin layer over the dough. Scatter the roasted garlic across the pesto. Toss the chicken with a tablespoon of olive oil and a generous sprinkling of salt and pepper. Layer the chicken on the tart, followed by the mozzarella and the Parmesan. Season with kosher salt and pepper.

Bake until the the cheese is melted and light golden brown, approximately 15-25 minutes (start checking early). Remove the tart from the baking sheet and let cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Cut into squares and serve immediately.

Note: You can easily sub pizza or flat bread dough in this recipe, or any other bread base you can think of. Also, I scattered some diced tomatoes on one of my slices for some extra color; feel free to do the same if you have some ripe ones lying around.
