2018 Already? Seems like BUCK ROGERS
SHOULD BE HERE (or at least his girl).
36 2

The above TV show ran from 1979 - 1981 and was a weird interpretation of the comic strip created in the 1920's.  However, they predicted some pretty amusing things:

1)  All EVIL people will wear helmets (just like in Spaceballs)
34
2)  CapITAL LETters ARe nO LoNGer ReLAVanT (anyone use text today? LOL)
3)  All thinking will be done by computers carried around by odd looking robots
35 2

All kidding aside, technology has been pretty amazing to watch accelerate over time.  We went from cassette tapes and VCRs to Netflix, streaming music and access to just about any bit of information in seconds.  Do you remember encyclopedias?  I did just about every report throughout my early years from those books...

Some of the advances are scary and it's worth noting them.  Is Google spying on us?  We now have face recognition to unlock phones, smart devices that listen to our every word, search engines that seemingly know what we're thinking before we ask the questions...  I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but the database Amazon, Google, Apple, etc. are building is pretty scary.  They know who we are, what we buy, where we go, what we are interested in, who we socialize with, who we don't socialize with, and the list goes on and on.

I am certain there is no way to stop this information from being gathered but I really wish they'd stop asking me to post pictures or reviews when I go to just about any place.  My son and his friends post pictures of things like toilets and salt shakers when asked by google to post.

Just be aware that EVERYTHING you do is being scored somewhere...kind of scary and something Buck Rogers didn't see as a side effect.

For the New Year, may what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them.  May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blind to your blemishes and tell the world about your virtues...

Enough of the sappiness.  Let's get this year off to a bright beginning!

And now for a new picture above- Can you guess where it is by looking "through the keyhole"?  "This ominous 'castillo' protecting the port has been here for centuries and was commissioned by the Spaniards in 1539.  Home to 5 Miss Universe winners, you won't need your passport to visit this island."  Can you guess the location?

Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to figure it out.  The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent issue.  Good luck and have fun.

Vienna, Austria - Keyhole Answer

"4 of the top 10 classical composers in history were born here.  PEZ candy was invented here (incidentally to look like a cigarette lighter), and so was the snow globe.  This city was divided into four parts after WWII.  There is also a very famous Chicago company named for it (I think)."
Last month, Mark Herr won the location by guessing correctly.  His answer - "Rathaus in Vienna." GREAT WORK (once again)!  He is right as the picture is of the Weiner Rathaus, the city hall of Vienna.

I was in Vienna only once in my lifetime and I remember being struck by the architecture and the music.  The people of Austria (Salzburg too of Sound of Music fame) genuinely love music.  They appreciate it more than anyplace I have ever been.  I played the string bass in an orchestra that travelled Europe when I was 17 years old.  Every concert we scheduled was full and the people asked for encore after encore by clapping in unison.  See what I am talking about here in this video clip (emergence at :56).  Concerts there are amazing and will take your breath away (even if you don't like classical music).

Vienna is often called The City of Music, or the World’s Capital of Music, as more famous composers have lived here than in any other city in the world. And 4 of the top 10 classical composers in history worked in Vienna between 1750 and 1825. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Johann Straus and Johannes Brahms are just a few who called Vienna home.
Vienna is also called the city of dreams. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, lived and worked in Vienna for much of his career. During this time, he had a significant impact on the city, causing it to be known as the birthplace of psychotherapy.

I remember the big ferris wheel with train cars for passengers. The Wiener Riesenrad, constructed in 1897, is the oldest still operating ferris wheel in the world. Located in the Wurstelprater amusement park, this is one of Vienna’s most popular tourist attractions. For many, it is also a symbol of the city. It is perhaps most famous for its part in the 1949 film The Third Man, considered one of the greatest films of all time.

Pez, the fun little tablet candies that we all know and love, were invented in Vienna in 1927. The name Pez is an abbreviation on the German word “pfefferminz”, meaning peppermint. Because the original PEZ candies only came in that one flavor! The dispenser was invented in 1949, designed to look like a lighter. Smoking was prohibited at that time, so the Pez slogan was “No Smoking – PEZing Allowed.”

The snow globe was also invented in Vienna. In 1900, Erwin Perzy, a fine instruments mechanic, was trying to improve the brightness of lightbulbs for a surgical lamp. But instead, he accidentally invented a snow globe. This first snow globe featured The Basilica of Mariazell, and was the catalyst for Perzy and his brother to open The Original Vienna Snow Globe shop.

The city was divided into 4 parts after WWII.  This division ended officially in 1995.

Vienna has been voted the world’s most livable city for the last 7 years in a row. Taking into account such factors as political, social and economic climate, medical care, education, recreational opportunities, environmental conditions, infrastructural conditions, Vienna consistently comes out on top!

And lastly, in 1893 over 27 million people flocked to the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago to witness the latest inventions, including the Vienna Beef hot dog, created by Austrian-Hungarian immigrants Emil Reichel and Sam Ladany.  Now that is some Viennese legacy...

"Mad Dog" Mattis REAL Quote of the month

31
"I think the way you maintain credibility is when you give your word on something, you live up to it."

Two boys (ages 5 and 7)...
16

Two little boys, ages 5 and 7, are excessively mischievous.

They are always getting into trouble and their parents know if any mischief occurs in their town, the two boys are probably involved.

The boys' mother heard that a preacher in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys.

The preacher agreed, but he asked to see them individually.

The mother sent the 5 year old in the morning, with the older boy to see the preacher in the afternoon.   The preacher, a huge man with a deep booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly,   "Do you know where God is, son?"

The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open.

So the preacher repeated the question in an even sterner tone,   "Where is God?!
Again, the boy made no attempt to answer.

The preacher raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed,
"WHERE IS GOD?!"

The boy screamed & bolted from the room, ran directly home & dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him.

When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked,
"What happened?"

The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied,
"We are in BIG trouble this time!"      "GOD is missing, and they think WE did it!"

Swiss woman angry over champagne refusal EJECTED from plane
12
BERLIN (AP) - German police say the pilot of a passenger jet destined for Zurich made an unscheduled stop at Stuttgart airport because a Swiss passenger become aggressive after being denied champagne.

Reutlingen police say crew members were unable to calm the 44-year-old business class passenger, who was angered by their refusal to serve her more sparkling wine on the flight from Moscow late Saturday.

Police said in a statement Sunday that the woman, who wasn't named, was escorted off the Airbus A320 and ordered to pay a security of 5,000 euros ($5,871).  They said the 43 passengers on board were never in danger, but the total cost involved in the unplanned stopover likely amounted to several tens of thousands of euros. article here

Job Interview
10
I was in a job interview today when the manager handed me his laptop and said, "I want you to try to sell me this laptop."

So I put it under my arm, walked out of the building and went home.

Eventually, he called my mobile and said "BRING IT BACK HERE RIGHT NOW!"

I said, "$200, and it's yours."

Needless to say, I didn't get the job.

Baby it's cold outside....
37 3

Some people say that it's the most wonderful time of the year.  Some people say Bah, Humbug.  Which one are you?  Pictured above is in the Daley Center with the Christmas Market.  If you have not gone to see it in person, it is quite something...not like Rockefeller Center but nice.  Not bad for the Second City.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

As we move into the Christmas Season, I want to point out once again some festive things to do as we enter the shortest days of the year (meaning daylight for those of you who are literal):

1) Ice Skating at the Bean (rink or ring)
2) Museums
3) Dining
4) Theater
5) Dive Bars
6) Get on a plane and get the heck out of here

And now for a new picture above- Can you guess where it is by looking "through the keyhole"?

Las Vegas, NV - Keyhole Answer

56 2

"This place is home to so many hotel rooms that it would take 288 years for one person to spend a night in every room.  Famously home to entertainers, magicians, musicians and singers - the city never sleeps.  And you can still go downtown and get a shrimp cocktail for 99 cents."

Last month,
Mike Rathsack won the location by guessing correctly.  His answer - "The answer is the Neon Museum in Las Vegas - they did a show on this, I think as a segment of CBS Sunday Morning." I found the video here.  GREAT WORK!

Perhaps one of my favorite silly movies of all time is Vegas Vacation with good old Clark W. Griswold and family.  Nick Papagiorgio is actually Rusty Griswold's alias as he buys a fake ID and then proceeds to win at slots, craps and virtually anything he plays.  If you have not seen the movie or don't mind watching it again, it's great fun and shows what Las Vegas looked like before its explosive growth.  It is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Some other movies that showcase this City of Lights are Oceans 11, Casino, The Hangover, Leaving Las Vegas (depressing), Honeymoon in Vegas, Bugsy, 21, Jason Bourne, Rainman, and Swingers to name a few.

Las Vegas is not for families although they tried to market the city that way in the mid 90s.  Vegas is more like a town for adults both young and old with plenty of good and bad things to do.

My first trip to Las Vegas was in 1990 when I was living in Los Angeles when things were really different.  Steak and Eggs were on special at every casino, drinks were free as long as you were close to a machine or table, the Dunes and Stardust ruled the strip and the first themed resort was opened by Steve Wynn - The Mirage. There was even a hint of the Mob still around...

Since then, Las Vegas (both on and off the strip) has exploded.  Themed hotels are the rule not the exception. Celebrity Chefs have invaded every part of the town, and it's very corporate earnings driven.  There are day clubs (that's right - clubs that are pool-centric and open during the day), roller coasters, moving walkways, a serviceable train system, and people EVERYWHERE.

Some fun facts:

There’s estimated to be at least 1,000 people living beneath Vegas in underground tunnels.

In 1980, a Las Vegas hospital had to suspend workers who were betting on when patients would die. One nurse was even accused of murdering a patient so she would win.

It would take 288 years for one person to spend one night in every hotel room in Las Vegas.

Contrary to popular belief, prostitution in Las Vegas is not legal.

Frederick W. Smith, the founder and CEO of FedEx, saved his company by gambling in Las Vegas. He took FedEx’s last $5,000 to Sin City and won $27,000 while gambling on blackjack, paying for the company’s $24,000 fuel bill.

The Las Vegas Strip is the brightest place on Earth when looked at from outer space.

15 of the world’s top 25 hotels are located in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has a “black book,” a list of people who are banned from setting foot in any casino in the city.

In the 1970s, Liberace played at the Hilton for a salary of $300,000 a week

In some Asian cultures, the number 4 is thought be bad luck. For that reason, some hotels in Vegas have no floors that start with the number 4.

The electric bill for the Luxor pyramid’s shining light is $51 per hour.

The Haircut
29 2
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.

His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car."

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."

The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."

"Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?"

Mini Cinnies - Bite Sized Cinnamon Rolls
Recipe:
Ingredients
1 can of Pillsbury crescent rolls
4 T brown sugar
1 t cinnamon
1 T butter
1 T flour
1/2 C powdered sugar
2 t milk

Directions:
Use half of package at a time so the dough stays cold.
In a small bowl mix together a tablespoon of slightly melted butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, and flour. Open crescent rolls, take half of dough and separate at the vertical seams. Press the diagonal seams of dough together so that the dough is smooth. Spoon half of the cinnamon mixture onto dough, roll short side up then continue with the remaining dough. Cut 2 inch slices and place all the rolls on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

When rolls have cooled, mix powdered sugar with  milk. Add more sugar/milk to get frosting to the consistency of your liking. Drizzle the sugar mixture over the rolls then let dry.
