Dog Days of Summer!
It
is amazing that summer is almost over already. However, there is plenty
more fun to be had and fall is a spectacular season in the midwest. The dog days are defined as the sultry part of the summer, supposed to occur during the period that Sirius, the Dog
Star, rises at the same time as the sun. This period is marked by lethargy, inactivity, or indolence...hmmm.
Here are a few ideas of things to do before the sand runs through the hourglass this summer: 1) Go to a baseball game (little league or pro - it matters not) 2) Eat a hot dog 3) Roast some marshmallows and make a s'more 4) Play horseshoes or bocce ball 5) Go to an outdoor concert 6) Eat on the patio at Piccolo Sogno for a great Chicago outdoor dining experience 7) Visit an outdoor festival 8) Take a boat tour of the city 9) Take a nap in a hammock 10) Have an Arnold Palmer
This
month is also host to the Chicago Air and Water Show as well as the Hot
Dog Fest. Most people are busy seeking out the last few bits of
traditional summer before the dreaded school year begins (sorry kids).
There is no way to avoid the feeling of being let down this month so
let's all try to stay positive and enjoy each moment...Last month's winner of the "guess the location" game
was Jennifer Winikates with the correct guess of Cape Town, South Africa. Thanks for playing. More about
the location below... And
now for a new picture above- Can you
guess where it is by looking through the keyhole? "This city is home to
giants, sharks, an old prison, a famous bridge and a very twisty road.
You can have a drink at the top of the Mark too." Can you guess the
location?
Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to figure
it out. The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent
issue. Good luck and have fun.

Cape Town, South Africa - Keyhole Answer
"This city is a stark contrast to the rest of its country let alone
it's continent. Therein lies the attraction and you don't even have to
wear a cape to explore it. At the very southern tip of its
continent, the level of sophistication is astounding in this otherwise
WILD place."
If you look at the picture above you can clearly see the stadium that was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup (remember the vuvuzelas?).
During the planning stages, it was known as the Green Point Stadium and
home to the Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City Soccer Teams. It has a
capacity of 55,000 and hosted the South African Sevens rugby
tournament. Now, surprisingly enough, the stadium is simply called Cape
Town Stadium (how original).
A city as vibrant as Cape Town is bound to have a few interesting
nicknames. “Tavern of the Seas” is one of these, as Cape Town was the
relax-and-refresh hub where weary sailors would gather after being at
sea for months on end.
Another almost-forgotten nickname for
Cape Town is “Cape Grab”, which Cape Town was known as because of
certain innkeepers who charged very high rates for sailors looking for
board and lodging.
A more commonly-used nickname for Cape
Town, which is the oldest town in South Africa, is the “Mother City”,
and the reasoning behind this takes a little more investigation to
figure out.
“In the 1930's some unknown party wrote to the
local Cape Town newspaper claiming that Cape Town was the only city in
South Africa that could justly call itself a metropolis. The public took
to this description and because the word metropolis is derived from the
Greek derivation of meter or metros meaning mother and polis meaning
city, the nickname of "Mother City" was born. Hence today South Africans know their city as being the Mother City."
Another (rather more
candid) explanation that has been offered as to why Cape Town is called
the “Mother City” is that it is “due to the highly expressive vocabulary
of the local dialect (in which the words "your mother" features
regularly) and also that it takes 9 months to do anything in this sleepy
hollow.”
Cape
Town, also called Kaapstad (Afrikaans) or iKapa (Xhosa), lies at the
southwestern tip of South Africa on the Cape Peninsula and is the
capital of the province Western Cape.
The Western Cape Province is one of the
nine provinces of the Republic of South Africa and can be compared in
size with the size of England.
The City Bowl, which is Cape Town's
business district, has got a picturesque setting on the Cape Peninsula
as it is framed by the Table Mountain range to the South, the Atlantic
Ocean to the West and the Indian Ocean to the South East.
Cape Town is the legislative capital of
South Africa, with the National Parliament located next to the Company
Gardens. From January to June the National Parliament meets in Cape
Town, the second half of the year it moves to Tswane (Pretoria).
The Mother City is South Africa’s
oldest city and was founded in 1652 when the Dutch East India Company
established the first settlement in Southern Africa.
Cape Town is with Johannesburg the
biggest transport hub in Southern Africa with an International Airport
which receives a huge upgrade this year and the Cape Town port is very
popular along the busiest trade route in the world with its working
harbor. The port also has got the second biggest container port in
Southern Africa.

Fun Site of the Month This
is a fun site to pimp people when they ask silly questions that they
could Google for themselves. For instance, say someone asked you how
many people live in Cape Town? You could go to this site, enter the

When you just don't care...aka old guy jokes
I was standing at the bar one night, minding my own business. This fat, ugly chick came up behind me, grabbed my butt and said, "You're kind of cute; you gotta phone number?" I said, "Yeah. You gotta pen?" She said, "Yeah, I gotta pen." I said, "You’d better get back in it before the farmer misses you!"
Janner: "Give me three packets of condoms, please." Cashier: "Do you need a paper bag with that, Sir?" Janner: "Nah… she's pretty good looking."
I was talking to a girl in the bar last night. She said, "If you lost a few pounds, had a shave and a haircut, you'd look alright." I said, "If I did that, I'd be talking to your friends over there, instead of you."
I was telling a girl in the bar about my ability to guess what day a woman was born just by feeling her boobs. "Really?" she said, "Go on then... try." After about thirty seconds of fondling she began to lose patience and said, "Come on, what day was I born?" I said, "Yesterday."
I went to the bar last night and saw a fat chick dancing on a table. I said "Good legs." The girl giggled and said, "Do you really think so?" I said, "Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now."

Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc on Stadium
Uninterrupted
rainfall has caused a football stadium to flood so much the goalposts
are under water and it now looks like nothing more than a giant swimming
pool.
Reports
said similar freak weather conditions have not been seen for decades,
and tens of thousands are now being evacuated from their homes.
Heavy
storms in the city of Ezhou, in Central China’s Hubei Province, have
inundated the streets with water and have caused serious disruptions to
public transport.
Mingtang Stadium, the city’s landmark, is now also full of floodwater, making it look more like a bathtub than football grounds.
Reports
said it is the first time in 30 years, since the stadium’s completion,
that it has ever been flooded, with water covering the pitch and even
reaching above the goal at either end.

BLT Pasta Salad
1 (16 ounce) package medium seashell pasta 1 pound sliced bacon 1 1/2 cups light Ranch-style salad dressing 1 small onion, chopped 2 tomatoes, chopped 1/2 head of iceberg lettuce, shredded
Directions
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the pasta, and
cook until tender, about 8 minutes. Drain, and rinse under cold water
to cool.
Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large deep skillet
over medium-high heat until browned and crisp. Remove from the pan and
drain on paper towels.
In a large bowl, stir together the
Ranch dressing, onion, lettuce and tomatoes. Mix in the cooled pasta.
The pasta will absorb some of the dressing, so don't worry if it seems
like too much. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight. Crumble bacon
over the top just before serving.
