And the winner is....
The 7th Annual Chili Cookoff is in the Books!
This
year we had 10 chili entrants. The event was held last Saturday
afternoon where attendees and participants stayed warm eating spicy
chili. The kids jumped in the bouncy house and DJ Dave kicked out some
tunes. There were hot, mild, atomic, sweet and spicy entries. All were
given equal footing but only the top 3 were awarded prizes and first
place was handed this lovely trophy. For the second year in a row,
Melissa Kolssak won with a sweet turkey / chicken entry (recipe at the
end of this newsletter). Congrats Melissa!
Voting Results: 52 votes - Chili Vanilli (Melissa Kolssak) 29 votes - Bambili 2 (Derek Eskew) 25 votes - Megabite (Ryan Erklin) 18 votes - Chilicarnation (Tom Bednarczyk) 17 votes - Smack my ass and call me Sally (Bob Briggs) 15 votes - I got 99 poblanos but winning ain't one (Lauren Cortes) 14 votes - Zing! Here
are some more pictures of the event. Great job and thank you everyone
who came and especially those who took the time to make a chili. In my
book, you are all winners!
And now for a new picture above- Can you
guess where it is by looking "through the keyhole"?
"This place is home to so many hotel rooms that it would take 288 years for one person to spend a night in every room.
Famously home to entertainers, magicians, musicians and singers - the
city never sleeps. And you can still go downtown and get a shrimp
cocktail for 99 cents." Can you guess the location?
Correct answers will be given recognition but half the fun is trying to figure
it out. The correct answer will be revealed in the subsequent
issue. Good luck and have fun.

Austin, TX - Keyhole Answer
"This
progressive city in an otherwise gun toting, conservative state is
really 'batty'. A capital city, almost the size of NYC, was home to
Matthew McConaughey's naked bongos in the park incident." Last month, Mark Herr won
the location by guessing correctly. He correctly answered Austin, TX.
Thanks for playing and well done. Hey Mark, isn't it about time we
came back out there for a visit? It's been a while...I think over a
year.
Located in Central Texas on the eastern edge of the American Southwest,
Austin is the capital of the state of Texas, the Lone Star State. The
city dates back to the 1830s, when the first Anglo-American settlers
arrived in the area, then part of Mexico. In 1837, settlers founded the
village of Waterloo on the banks of the Colorado River, the first
permanent settlement in the area. By 1839, Waterloo would adopt the name
Austin and the frontier town would become the capital of the Republic
of Texas. The City is named for Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of
Texas.” Austin claims to be the BBQ capital of the world. That may be the case. Austin is in Travis, Hays and Williamson counties. With a population of
820,611 (2011 U.S. Census), it's the 13th most populous city in the
United States; the fourth most populous city in Texas. Austin’s mild climate allows you to enjoy outdoor activities virtually
year round. Austin has 300 days of sunshine a year and an average
temperature of 71 degrees in November. From March to October (typically), 1.5 million bats
emerge nightly from narrow but deep crevices in the underside of the
Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. They usually start to emerge
from the bridge around 20 minutes before sundown.
The live music and nightlife in this town is world renown...

YouTube now offers TV - CUT THAT CORD!
Watch LIVE TV from 40+ networks. This
is NOT an ENDORSEMENT for the service but rather an informative note so
that you know what is available. We are very close to getting rid of
our cable boxes and this service along with SlingTV, Hulu and Vue.
The $35-per-month streaming bundle is only available in markets where
YouTube TV can carry at least three live local broadcast channels, which
right now covers about half of U.S. homes. And to watch YouTube TV on a

When
I was young in the 70s, we never took a road trip without getting a
"TripTik". My father would go to AAA and sit down with someone about an
upcoming trip. The rep would create a route from here to wherever we
were going. Then they would create a series of maps that you would flip
through every so many miles. The maps were filled with interesting
stops, restaurants and rest stops.
Who would have thought that was a business then or that our phones would replace all of this now?
check out this video of this old school way of navigation.

BACK TO BACK WINNING TURKEY / CHICKEN CHILI RECIPE (aka Chili Vanilli)
1 Pkg. Ground Turkey 1 Pkg. Ground Chicken 1 Onion – chopped 1 Green Pepper – chopped 2 cans of Stewed Tomatoes (chili seasoned) 1 large can (28 oz.) Crushed Tomatoes 1 can Chili Beans (medium spicy) 1 pkg. Chili Seasoning Sugar Brown Sugar Cayenne Pepper (dried seasoning) Chipotle Chili Pepper (bottled) Garlic Salt
1.
Brown ground turkey in skillet. While cooking, season with garlic
salt. Finish when turkey is “crumbly” and all pink color is gone. Drain
and put in chili pot. 2. Brown ground chicken in same skillet
(with the residue from the cooked turkey still in pan). While cooking,
season with the liquid Chipotle Chili Pepper flavor. Finish when
chicken is “crumbly” and all pink color is gone. Drain and add to chili
pot. 3. In same skillet, add some olive oil to the residue from the cooked chicken and turkey. 4.
Add 2/3 of the chopped onion and all of the chopped green pepper to
skillet. Saute the vegetables until the onions are clear and peppers a
little softened. While cooking, sprinkle the mixture with Cayenne
Pepper (seasoned to liking). 5. Once cooked, add to chili pot and mix. 6. Add all the cans of tomatoes and chili beans to chili pot (DO NOT DRAIN cans before adding them). 7. Mix well 8. Turn on heat low to medium 9. Add entire package of Chili Seasoning & mix well 10. Add about (I usually eye it, but approx.) ½ cup packed brown sugar, ½ cup of sugar 11. Season with additional Cayenne pepper and liquid Chipotle Chili Pepper to liking 12. Mix well and bring up to a slow boil. 13.
Once boiling, reduce heat to low or extra low. I don’t totally cover
pot with lid, but leave the lid a little off-center so the pot can
“breathe”. 14. Cook super low and slow, mixing occasionally. I’ve
let this chili simmer for an hour up to 4 hours. Whatever fits your
“dining” schedule. 15. When ready to eat, use rest of chopped
onion for topping. Add shredded cheese, oyster crackers and sour cream
as desired. A nice addition to this meal is a double-box of cornbread cooked and served hot with some honey. A cold beer is also quite tasty as well!
