Another
school year is in the books and the kids are out for SUMMER! This is
the time of year where we all look forward to being outdoors. Whether
it is a trip to the lake, the mountains, a state park or just hanging out
in the back yard, summer is a great time of year in the midwest.
I
vaguely remember being a student in the 80's and looking forward to being
free from classes and the summer weather. Back then we looked forward
to going to Marriott's Great America, Phil's Beach, Oak Street Beach
or the Wisconsin Dells. One of the best places was Phil's Beach as it
was probably the most dangerous attractions known to man. There was
not a single time that you went there and didn't see an ambulance. I
have placed some pictures below of the now defunct beach (you wonder why).
This
month we usher in the official start of summer (June 21st) and look forward
to many festivals in and around the city. Get out there and enjoy the
summer months. They go by quick...
Man
do I miss Phil's Beach. What a riot that place was. Take a
stroll down memory lane below.

Windows 11. Go for it.
Windows
11 is Microsoft’s newest major release of its operating system and the
successor to Windows 10. The OS features an all-new simplified, yet
modernized, interface and was designed to inspire productivity and
creativity.
As
of October 5, 2021, Microsoft Windows 11 is available as a general release
to the public. Assuming your personal computer meets the prerequisite requirements including
installation of Windows 10 1909 or later, you can upgrade to Windows 11
by navigating to the Update & Security settings screen.
Users
may also take advantage of the Windows 11 Installation Assistant to
bypass the Windows 10 Update & Security screen and upgrade to Windows
11 directly.
Now
that it has been out almost 2 years, it's ready.

Las Vegas, NV The Landmark Hotel and Casino
|
|
"This landmark is no longer standing as it was torn down
years ago. However, it is one hotel of many who struggled (s) in this
town. From a one horse town in the 50's to the bustling city of
nearly 3 million. It's hot here from now until October. Extra
points for naming the former hotel. "
The
strange case of the Landmark Hotel & Casino began in the planning
stages when it was originally conceived to be 14 stories tall.
Construction began in September of 1961, but it wasn't long before
the scope of work increased to 20 stories with completion set for the
spring of 1963.
Inspired
by the Space Needle design in Seattle, the project grew in scope yet again
the following year adding an 11 additional stories. This was to
surpass the Mint's planned tower and, at 31 total stories, it would become
the tallest building in Nevada.
Plagued
by financing woes that delayed construction, it wasn't until Howard Hughes
bought the property in the late 1960's for $17 Million, financing another
$3 million of his own money that the hotel was completed. Finally
opening on July 1, 1969, The Landmark was already cast in the shadow of the
first mega-resort in Las Vegas, The International (now Westgate), which
cost an estimated $60 million in comparison.
While
The Landmark was certainly a sight for its time, its impractical design,
continual development of mega-resorts and numerous changes in ownership
proved to be its downfall as it never became a success. By the late
1970's, the hotel had already lost $15 Million and continued to lose at a
rate of $3 Million yearly through the 1980's.
With
a limited number of rooms, plans to expand The Landmark to compete with the
mega resorts fell through in 1980's leaving the hotel to close for good in
1990. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Purchased the
property in 1993, later demolishing the resort in November of 1995 to build
- you guessed it - a parking lot.

Can You Get A Free Fry Refill At McDonald's
By Just Asking?
|
|
At many restaurants, getting your soft drink topped off won't
cost you extra, but is it the same with your food? While most people don't
visit restaurants expecting to get a refill of their sides, can it happen?
McDonald's has faced
this question for years, and the way they approach refills might surprise
you. Their unorthodox refill practices aren't the clearest at first sight,
but the policy's relative obscurity might work to your advantage if you
know exactly what to do -- and how to do it. With McDonald's refill policy,
they just may have mastered the art of giving customers what they
want without draining too much corporate money. So the next time you
hit up this popular fast food joint, you might want to take a different
tack when it comes to refills. They may surprise you with their refill
policy — and it could keep you coming back for more.
Most sit-down
restaurants will serve you a mountain of French fries that seems
unfinishable, but at fast food restaurants, you can get a more controllable
fry portion. Still, though, deciding between two sizes, ordering the
smaller portion of fries, and still craving more after you finish eating is
never fun.
Thankfully, McDonald's
has a solution for this problem: They may allow fry refills, or at least
they did at one location. A viral video showed a customer successfully
asking for a fry refill, and even now everyone wants to try it. The next
time you sit down at the fast food chain and polish off your fries too
quickly, ask for a refill. All you need is to flag down an employee and ask
them to fill up your fry container. The policy isn't an
"official" one, so not every location honors it, but multiple
people have shared that the hack has worked for them. Will this hack work
for you too? Your mileage may vary, but it never hurts to ask politely for
another portion of fries. After all, the worst they can say is
"no."
